Call of Duty Black Ops 7 Call of Duty Black Ops 7

Call of Duty is no stranger to annual instalments, but you may have been surprised to see another Black Ops title slated for 2025.

We're seemingly long past the days where Modern Warfare and Black Ops would switch out with more experimental titles like Ghosts, WWII, and Advanced Warfare, and that means just a year after Black Ops 6 (which was great), we'll be getting Call of Duty Black Ops 7.

Revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase this month, Black Ops 7 is much more futuristic than last year's game, and the Black Ops timeline is getting pretty hard to follow.

With that in mind, we've placed it in our Call of Duty Black Ops timeline so you can follow along a little more easily.

The first thing to remember is that Black Ops takes place in a separate universe to any other Call of Duty subseries, so don't expect to see Captain Price or Soap McTavish turn up here.

With that in mind, the Black Ops timeline actually starts with World at War from 2008.

Call of Duty World at War World at War is a sort of Black Ops prequel

World at War - 1942 - 1945

Set on the Pacific theatre and the Eastern front of World War II, World at War acts as a prologue for the Black Ops series.

Black Ops - 1961 - 1968

This seminal entry in the series offers the appearance of real-life characters like Fidel Castro, John F. Kennedy, Robert McNamara and more, and offers a twisting narrative full of memorable missions.

Black Ops Cold War - 1981 - 1984

This 2020 release introduces Russell Adler and has players hunting down a Soviet agent called Perseus (seemingly back from the grave) across the globe.

Call of Duty Black Ops 2 Black Ops 2 features two time periods in its campaign

Black Ops 2 - 1986 - 1989

Appearing twice in this list thanks to a time jump that sees some of its missions play out in the future, Black Ops 2 stars Alex Mason after his appearance in the first Black Ops title, and sees him warring with arms dealer Raul Menendez.

Black Ops 6 - 1991

Last year's game kicks off in the first Gulf War, with a spy thriller storyline that includes an appearance from Bill Clinton, references to Saddam Hussein, and a psychochemical weapon.

Black Ops 2 - 2025

In the future portions of Black Ops 2, Menendez rises to power as head of an organisation which Alex Mason's son, David, works to take down.

Call of Duty Black Ops 3 Black Ops 3 marks the furthest into the future that Black Ops has gone

Black Ops 7 - 2035

This year's game will show the aftermath of Black Ops 2's war but a decade later, and also stars David Mason. It looks like Raul Menendez will make an appearance, too.

Black Ops 4 - 2040s

Black Ops 4 has no single-player campaign, but takes place in the 2040s as players use a variety of Specialists, including Alex Mason's granddaughter and more, in multiplayer.

Black Ops 3 - 2065

The furthest the series has gone into the future, Black Ops 3 included wall-running and all manner of gadgets, and takes place during a third Cold War.
