The Lagos State Professional Photographers Association of Nigeria (LASPPAN) marked the 2025 edition of World Photography Day with its annual youth conference, bringing together young creatives, industry leaders, and photography enthusiasts in Lagos.
This years edition highlighted the role of young photographers in shaping the future of visual storytelling and the creative economy.
Speaking at the conference, Governor of LASPPAN and National President of the Nigerian Professional Photographers Association, Aremo Ademola Olukayode Bosugo, praised the resilience and creativity of the youth.
The youths own tomorrow, and they have shown us that they are capable. Thats why we are here to celebrate them today, he said.
Reflecting on the significance of World Photography Day, Bosugo, who has been in the profession for nearly four decades, noted that the day set aside by the United Nations, recognises the contributions of creatives, particularly in the digital imaging sector.
It shows that people are thinking about us, appreciating what weve done, what we are doing, and what we continue to do, he added.
Busigo also urged young photographers to remain united and take advantage of the platforms created to support their growth.
Eventually, we will retire. But when that happens, we want to know that we have capable hands to hand over to, he said.
Bosugo highlighted the high cost of photography equipment as a major challenge faced by the profession.

The cheapest camera ranges between �3.5 million to �10 million, and setting up a world-class studio could cost as much as �25 to �30 million. We need government support, not just in training but also in empowering photographers with equipment so they can compete globally, he stressed.
LASPPAN Youth Ambassador, Mr. Afolabi Kayode Ahmmed, described the conference as an avenue for continuous learning and adaptation.
We are here to learn, unlearn, and relearn. This is our profession, and we must keep updating ourselves to meet current trends. This conference is for educational purposes, he said.
Also addressing participants, Creative Director of Capital A.K. Media and current EKJ Zone Chairman of LASPPAN, Abiodun Abdul-Akim, emphasised integrity, consistency, and innovation as essential values for success.
I want to see a Nigeria where photographers are as wealthy as professionals in other industries. I also envision a future where photographers enjoy royalties and copyright benefits, just like the music industry, he said.
He highlighted the cost of equipment as a major hurdle, urging government and financial institutions to provide loans and subsidies for service-oriented businesses like photography.
On his advice to aspiring photographers, he said:
Passion is not just by word of mouth. When there are obstacles, challenges, and barriers, stand tall and overcome them. The sky is only the starting point.
