A millennial homeowner was left in shock after seeing what their neighbor installed on the side of their house, so they turned to the internet for advice.
Reddit user u/Callmekittycaaaaat shared a photo online of the camera that her neighbors appear to have installed outside their home. Alongside the pictures, she explained that the box "appears to have an access lid" at the top and it "appears to swivel underneath" at the base. She noted that the camera was also connected to power, and she'd even seen it in motion.
The Reddit user, from the East Coast, told Newsweek that she felt "intrigued and curious" by the seemingly high-tech camera. At first, she wasn't sure what it was capturing, but when she saw the camera change positions, she knew it had to be recording something specific.
"I wasn't sure if it was a telescope or camera at first, but after learning more about it, I'm assuming it can record some or all the footage," u/Callmekittycaaaaat said. "I first felt intrigued, but after the position of the camera moved to face my house straight on, I became wary because the owner didn't discuss this with me or my partner beforehand."

She posted about it on Reddit on July 14, seeking advice and asking other internet users if they knew what it was recording. The post went viral with over 11,000 votes and more than 830 comments in just a matter of days.
The response has been a mixture of shock and curiosity, but thankfully, Reddit users came through with some useful information about the camera. The poster learned that it's part of "a drone detection system," and it appears to be a long-range camera. With that in mind, she's no longer sure if her house appears on the feed since she's so close.
"I figured it was a special camera for wildlife viewing. I would've never thought it was part of a military defense system, which makes the situation even more perplexing. I don't think it's that big of a deal, but many people were warning me of possible dangers. That is the internet however, and people who don't know the situation jump to conclusions," u/Callmekittycaaaaat continued.
The camera was taken down on the same evening that u/Callmekittycaaaaat shared her Reddit post. However, the stand it was connected to remains on the property.
Either way, u/Callmekittycaaaaat felt uneasy about it being installed, telling Newsweek that it's something she "would personally discuss" with her neighbors before doing.
With over 830 comments on the viral Reddit post at the time of writing, many social media users have shared their thoughts on the unexpected addition.
One comment reads: "Don't care what it is for, how absent minded or downright hostile is it to point something like that at a neighbor."
Another Reddit user wrote: "Definitely a thermal lens as well as a long range lens. Not civilian whatsoever."
While another person replied: "First thought was some sort of weather station. But with that big lens I don't know."
