There was never any doubt about Neveal Hackshaws talent, only whether his fitness would match it.

Once a mainstay in Trinidad and Tobagos national team under former head coach Angus Eve, Hackshaw gradually fell out of favour as concerns mounted over his conditioning.

Fans and analysts alike pointed to a visible dip in mobility, with the versatile midfielder-turned-defender struggling to shed excess weight and rediscover his sharpness.

But now, Hackshaw appears revitalised.

Last weekend, a noticeably leaner and more mobile Hackshaw opened his 2024 scoring account with a long-range strike, helping lead Oakland Roots to a 20 victory over Loudoun United in USL Championship, the second tier of USA soccer.

His goal, a confident drive from distance, set the tone early and capped a performance that saw him both command the back line and step confidently into midfield when needed.

Comfortable in his hybrid role as a defensive midfielder turned centre back, the Trinidadian looked in full controlreading the game well, closing down threats, and showcasing a renewed engine that allowed him to push forward with purpose.
