Windsors Corey Bellemore, already a standout in the world of beer mile racing, has broken his own world record again.

The 30-year-old former University of Windsor track star completed the gruelling combination of chugging beer and sprinting a mile in just four minutes and 27 seconds Saturday at the 11th annual Beer Mile World Classic in Lisbon, Portugal.

Bellemore told the Star that he felt disbelief and satisfaction when he shaved exactly one second off his 2021 best.

I think that was the biggest goal, said Bellemore.

I didnt come here just to run a race and just participate. I wanted to get after it and see if I could break my previous record.

The Beer Mile World Classic, first introduced in 2014 and inspired by a casual tradition among Canadian college runners, challenges athletes to chug a full 355 mL beer (four in total) with a minimum of 5 per cent alcohol content before sprinting each of four laps. There are penalties for leftover foam or spillage.

I know its kind of a silly event to most, and it is to me, as well, said Bellemore.

Its very unique. Its very different. It incorporates two things that shouldnt be mixed together.

Bellemore has now claimed the world title seven times. He first broke the world record in 2016.

Last Saturday, athletes in Portugal cracked open a can of the Worlds Away Modern Lager the events official beer created by Barrie, Ontario craft brewery Flying Monkey.

Bellemore said he made sure the supply was hand-delivered to Portugal, personally flying over more than 200 cans.

Just last year, he was responsible for bringing international athletes to the Beer Mile World Classic hosted in Windsor at the University of Windsors Alumni Field.

He had previously hinted at retiring from the beer mile, but he doesnt appear to be stepping away just yet.

These days, Bellemore said he has his sights set on different athletic feats.

He has competed in two half Ironman triathlons so far this year and recently obtained a professional license.

In the meantime, Bellemore said the beer mile fits in once a year, and its out of season and it doesnt interrupt training or anything like that.

Ive always made time and gone to these events and just gave them my all, he said. So, I think if it continues to fit, Ill keep doing these.

With the race behind him, Bellemore said he has enjoyed sightseeing in Lisbon, and then the island of Madeira, before flying home to return to training.
