- FIFA has migrated its NFT marketplace to an Avalanche-powered blockchain
- The marketplace was previously hosted on the Algorand blockchain
- The migration is meant to enhance FIFA’s ability to offer unique NFTs and “immersive fan experiences”
International football association, FIFA, has migrated its NFT marketplace and collectibles from Algorand to an Avalanche-powered layer 1 blockchain . Known as the FIFA Blockchain, the association stated that it will help provide unique collectibles, enhance “immersive fan experiences,” and improve the way collectors interact with external web3 wallet s. The association disclosed that it has already migrated its FIFA Collect NFT collection to the new chain, indicating FIFA’s commitment to increasing its blockchain and web3 exploration efforts.
FIFA Blockchain: The Foundation of Digital Products
According to a statement , the FIFA Blockchain “will be the foundation for a new suite of digital products.” It added that the blockchain benefits from Avalanche’s sub-second transaction speeds, low fees, and no network congestion.
Avalanche noted that its infrastructure will help FIFA to seamlessly serve a global audience even during high-traffic events like “World Cup matches or major tournament launches.” It added that the blockchain has the scalability, speed, and flexibility required by “the world’s most-watched sport.”
Francesco Abbate, the CEO of Modex, a company that helps FIFA develop and implement digital collectibles, disclosed that the FIFA Blockchain is EVM compatible, adding that it will provide a “future-proof foundation for growth.”
Abbate also noted that the decision to move to Avalanche was influenced by factors like scalability, performance, transaction fees, and customizability. He added that the new blockchain lays the groundwork for a “new era of digital football.”
A Long-Term Web3 Vision
According to Abbate, migrating from Algorand and creating a new blockchain is part of its long-term web3 vision, adding that Avalanche satisfied the technical requirements needed “to support the continued growth of [FIFA’s] digital ecosystem.”
FIFA announced the Algorand-based FIFA Collect+ web3 project in 2022, saying that it’s meant to allow global football fans to affordably own NFTs. The collection and blockchain aren’t FIFA’s only projects in the space. Last year, it partnered with Mythical Games to develop the FIFA Rivals web3 game.
With FIFA building its own blockchain, it’ll likely invite other football-focused projects to migrate to the FIFA Blockchain.
